The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is the apex body responsible for implementing government policies related to defence and military affairs in India. It plays a pivotal role in managing the employment and careers of personnel in the Indian Armed Forces—Army, Navy, and Air Force. Its work ensures that the armed services are well-prepared, strategically positioned, and professionally supported to defend the nation’s sovereignty and maintain peace. The Ministry coordinates policy formulation, strategic planning, human resource management, and welfare of military personnel.
The MoD is responsible for setting defence policies that align with national security interests. These policies determine the structure and strength of the armed forces, the nature of military operations, and the framework for personnel employment and training. It also works in coordination with the National Security Council (NSC) and other security bodies to assess threats and guide force development.
The Ministry oversees the recruitment process through various bodies such as:
Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for officer-level entries like the National Defence Academy (NDA), Combined Defence Services (CDS), and Short Service Commission (SSC).
Service Recruitment Boards (Army Recruiting Office, Naval Recruitment, Air Force Selection Board) for soldiers and technical staff.
It ensures fair, transparent, and merit-based selection through physical tests, written exams, medical evaluations, and interviews.
The MoD administers premier training institutions such as:
National Defence Academy (NDA)
Indian Military Academy (IMA)
Officers Training Academy (OTA)
Air Force Academy (AFA)
Indian Naval Academy (INA)
These institutions train recruits in discipline, tactics, leadership, and technology. Regular refresher and skill enhancement programs are also conducted to keep personnel updated with the latest in defence technology and warfare techniques.
The MoD monitors the postings, transfers, promotions, and specialization of officers and soldiers to meet operational needs. It maintains a structured career path, addressing both short service and permanent commission officers, and manages rotational deployments in sensitive zones like borders and UN peacekeeping missions.
To support service members and their families, the MoD provides:
Medical care via Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS)
Education benefits through schools like Army Public Schools and scholarships
Housing support via the Married Accommodation Project (MAP)
Canteen Services through CSD (Canteen Stores Department)
Pensions and post-retirement benefits for ex-servicemen
It also oversees institutions like Kendriya Sainik Board (KSB) to assist veterans and war widows.
The MoD allocates and manages budgets for defence salaries, pensions, training, and infrastructure. It works with subordinate departments such as:
Department of Defence (DoD)
Department of Military Affairs (DMA)
Department of Defence Finance (DoDF)
It ensures efficient use of funds for both operational needs and employment-related expenses.
Through initiatives like ‘Make in India’, the MoD promotes self-reliance in defence production, which opens up job opportunities for technical personnel and engineers within defence PSUs and research organisations such as DRDO.
If a candidate is selected through the CDS examination to become an officer in the Indian Air Force, the Ministry of Defence oversees every stage of their employment journey:
Recruitment through UPSC and SSB interview
Training at the Air Force Academy (AFA) with physical, academic, and flight training modules
Deployment to an airbase or combat squadron based on operational requirements
Career Progression through performance appraisals, advanced training, and promotions
Welfare including family accommodation, healthcare, children’s education, and post-retirement pension
If the officer later retires, the MoD also manages their pension, resettlement schemes, and ex-servicemen welfare programs under the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare (DESW).
