The procedure for registering a Muslim marriage in India varies depending on the state, as marriage registration is governed by state laws. However, the general steps for registering a Muslim marriage are as follows: General Procedure for Muslim Marriage Registration: Eligibility: Both parties must be Muslims and have performed a valid marriage under Muslim personal law. The parties must meet the legal age for marriage: Male: 21 years Female: 18 years Documents Required: Application form (available at the Sub-Registrar’s office or online in some states). Proof of marriage: Nikahnama (marriage certificate issued by the Qazi or religious authority). Proof of identity: Aadhaar card, passport, PAN card, or voter ID. Proof of age: Birth certificate, school leaving certificate, or any official document with a date of birth. Address proof: Utility bills, rental agreement, or other official address verification documents. Passport-size photographs of both spouses. Witnesses: Three witnesses with their ID proofs. Application Submission: The couple must fill out and sign the marriage registration form. Submit the form along with the required documents to the Sub-Registrar of Marriages in the jurisdiction where the marriage took place or where either party resides. Verification of Documents: The Sub-Registrar verifies all submitted documents and may require the presence of the couple and witnesses for questioning or confirmation. Marriage Registration Certificate: Upon successful verification, the Sub-Registrar issues a marriage registration certificate, which serves as legal proof of the marriage. Additional Notes: Some states require online pre-registration, while others follow a manual process. In states like Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, Muslim marriages can also be registered under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, if both parties agree and meet the required conditions. Importance of Marriage Registration: Legal proof of marriage for obtaining passports, visas, or government benefits. Evidence in cases of inheritance, divorce, or child custody. Protects the rights of both spouses under the law. It is advisable to check the specific marriage registration rules and forms required in your state to ensure compliance with local regulations.
